Striders at OUTRUNCANCER Angmering 2025

With it being the first time running at the OUTRUNCANCER event in Angmering this weekend I wasn’t sure what to expect but boy was I pleased when I arrived. The Fox Inn pub had allowed us use of it’s facilities and the registration was simple and quick, I’d heard parking could be a challenge so headed out early and managed to secure a spot right outside.

People gathered over the next hour and as the energy built as volunteer briefings were called and team photos were taken. Bibs pinned, shoes tied and retied and a coffee knocked back it was time for the pre race briefing and warm up. Our very own Anita did a great job letting us know what to expect around the course and Mark got everyone moving before setting us on our way to the start line.

As a canicross competitor we were allowed a 2 minute head start on the non dog runners, this meant an opportunity to commit to the beautiful declining hill start and set a good pace. After only a short section of road we were into the beautiful grounds of Angmering park estate, anyone that’s ran here before will know the majesty of the place and to see it in an autumnal state was lovely, you couldn’t keep your eyes up for too long though as the prior weeks erratic weather had meant there was some pretty deep and muddy puddles to either avoid or commit to the possibility of losing a shoe!

The race consisted of 1 5KM loop for those on the shorter distance and 2 slightly longer loops for those doing the 10KM. The terrain was mostly forgiving and other than one or two small hills was fairly flat with a long sloping downhill before heading up the final stretch and turning into the finish funnel.

The variety of abilities of runners, walkers and DINOSAURS was incredible with everyone making space for each other when passing and generally giving words of encouragement.  All marshals and volunteers were friendly and informative and overall the whole experience was one that I’d highly recommend all to try.

The turnout from Striders was phenomenal, with members all over the course as both participants, marshals and volunteers. With OUTRUNCANCER being one of our chosen charities I’d like to think we did them proud today!

A special shout out to Mike & Tom for placing both 4th and 5th overall on the 10KM as well as myself and Ian taking 1st and 2nd for the 10KM Canicrossers!

The striders spirit was out in force with many runners staying behind to ensure all those who finished were warmly welcomed across the line.  Every time I participate in a club event, be it WSFRL, these sponsored events or other races I’m in awe of the level of support that’s shown.

I & the rest of the club very much look forward to seeing you at the next event the WSFRL Walstead 5 on  Sunday October 12th. Come and be a part of something great!

Let’s go striders! 🟠⚫️🎊
